After you figure it all out, it's actually kind of cool being able to work out how to best link things together and customize special abilities. Text help is available, but it's vague, and the text itself is presented in such small fonts that you can barely read it-even on a high-def 50-inch screen. Red and green genes are connected with the DNA strings in a power-up screen that functions as a puzzle minigame, which you're left to pretty much figure out for yourself. Whenever you kill an alien or spot one of these access ports, you just have to slam your arm into it to acquire the goodies.īut none of this icky stuff is properly explained. These can also be strung together to give you special skills like health regeneration and shields. As a transforming alien, you can make use of dead ETs and biomass power-up ports to acquire genes and DNA strings that give you on-the-fly boosts. While the design is structured as a straightforward third-person shooter, with an over-the-shoulder camera perspective and basic controls for firing guns, punching enemies, and jumping, some of the game's more innovative aspects aren't explained well. The game sure doesn't make a good first impression. It's even harder to follow the action, due to some serious issues with how MorphX is presented. There might be an interesting story in here somewhere, but poor dialogue translation from the original Russian and cheesy dialogue (you'll hear "Damn aliens!" and comments about being a "freak" every couple of minutes during combat) make it hard to follow the plot. Then, you're all buddy-buddy with the humans against the aliens. One moment, you're being coddled by human soldiers battling the aliens the next, you're fighting both the humans and the aliens. "Huh?" moments are dotted throughout the story. One of the most interesting aspects of MorphX is that the tough, tattooed protagonist is slowly transforming into an alien (arm first.) Nothing is explained very well, though. As the game begins, you're on the run from this treatment and trying to escape some kind of alien base in the ruins of the city. All that's left is a smoking ruin-even good old Moscow-where you and other people are being infected with some sort of virus that morphs people into insectoid ETs. That clip sets the stage for the single-player campaign (the only mode of play available), which deals with the apocalyptic aftereffects of nasty aliens destroying the planet. You know you're in trouble right at the opening cutscene, which is a dated piece of work loaded with some of the worst acting this side of a Mexican soap opera. One tiny spoiler-you don't look like this when the game begins. So what starts out as an interesting twist on the standard console shooter soon turns into an annoying experience. All of the intriguing ideas are buried under huge problems with things like spectacularly hard difficulty in the early going, confusing level design, and spread-out save points. Russian developer Buka Entertainment's shoot-'em-up makes some good use of this interesting blend of sources, but the whole thing falls apart due to a ton of design flaws and visual shortcomings that make the game look like something from the PlayStation 2 era. There is a variety of weapons-including firearms, clubs, plasma projectors and grenades-for melee or ranged combat against enemies. If you were to cross a third-person shooter with the movie District 9, you might get MorphX. You can build and change alien DNA chains to improve different abilities like harvested energy from the bodies of defeated enemies, increased regeneration rate, enhanced vision or develop physical manifestations with access to energy weapons and sharp claws. While searching for an antidote to cure their allies against the alien mutation, players will solve DNA mini-games and puzzles for the option to absorb new abilities and become more adept at fighting tougher enemies. The game features a unique adaptive combat system, where players awaken in an alien laboratory and will choose throughout the game to either enhance their performance with alien DNA that increases attributes like stamina and health, or retain their humanity to fight the invading forces. The player navigates an alien-infested Red Square in Moscow, shown under the effects of a nuclear catastrophe.

The symbol of angel’s wings on a package come to give him hope, but the story never suggests that it has anything to do with God. Reflecting on “fate’s” provision, Chuck concludes that we must always maintain hope because we never know what the tide might bring in next. In the end, Chuck and Kelly both make moral, honorable decisions about their future relationship. He is also very empathetic to a co-worker who has since lost his wife to cancer (in contrast to being awkwardly supportive years before). Upon returning home from his ordeal, Chuck apologizes to others for not being there for them during their own recent trials. In a touching scene, he looks at the ID of one of the dead crewmen who washed ashore just prior to burying him and realizes that he didn’t even know his friend’s real name-a testimony to the tyranny of the urgent and how busyness can distract us from relating to the people close to us at a deeper level. A sense of personal and professional responsibility is evident in Chuck, even after he’s marooned (he sorts and respects the beached parcels for days before opening any). Chuck comes to understand that his former outlook on life has cost him the things that are most important (“I should have never gotten on that plane” he tells Kelly). One of the crewmen on the doomed jet puts himself at risk by heroically assisting Chuck as the plane is going down. He shows amazing perseverance, whether trying to open coconuts or start a fire with sticks. Positive elements: In the throes of a desperate situation with no end in sight, Chuck manages to maintain a sense of hope during his four years on the island. It’s an ironic twist that Chuck’s problem-solving background helps him survive being a castaway while the skills learned as a castaway help him adapt to a new life in civilization. After a heroic struggle, he is saved and brought home. Fate finally offers Chuck a chance to escape the island on a raft. Daniel Defoe’s 18th Century literary hero, Robinson Crusoe, turned to a Bible and found God in the midst of nothingness. He must resist desperation and not reach the point of cracking up. Once Chuck’s physical needs are met, his biggest struggle involves his emotional and psychological health. Along with a picture of Kelly, it becomes a symbol of hope and a reason to endure. There is one package with an angel wing logo on it that he does not open. First, he must find a way to meet basic human needs (food, water and shelter), which he accomplishes with the help of various FedEx packages that have washed ashore with him. With no one there to vote him off the island, Chuck makes the best of it. On one such trip, Chuck’s manic existence abruptly halts when his plane goes down in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and he becomes stranded on a remote, uninhabited island. His fast-paced career takes him, often at a moment’s notice, to far-flung locales and away from his girlfriend, Kelly. Chuck Noland is a FedEx systems engineer whose personal and professional life are ruled by the clock. I saw a post where someone said their players used a fist-sized hole in a door to spam attack enemies from the safety of 95% cover. Tie this in with the line of sight requirement and some tricks go out the window. Verbal & Somatic requirements– This means that you have to be able to speak (not be Silenced or gagged, for example) and move your hands (not be tied or otherwise restrained). With that out of the way, let’s take it from the top: It doesn’t say how loud the dolorous bell is, but if it were me I would say that the bell could be heard at least in adjacent rooms. I’ll say it again, DM’s don’t pay enough attention to how LOUD some spells are, like the Booming Blade & Thunderclap cantrips. But there are some things that make it reasonable as long as the DM is paying attention- the verbal and somatic requirements, line of sight, necrotic damage, wisdom saving throw and the noise. My Comments: I have to admit, I thought Toll the Dead was over-powered when I first read it. The spell’s damage increases by one die when you reach 5th level (2d8 or 2d12), 11th level (3d8 or 3d12), and 17th level (4d8 or 4d12). If the target is missing any of its hit points, it instead takes 1d12 necrotic damage.Īt Higher Levels. The target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or take 1d8 necrotic damage. You point at one creature you can see within range, and the sound of a dolorous bell fills the air around it for a moment. Even if I wake up in the middle of the night for a bathroom trip I can go right back to sleep, no problem. I have trouble getting to sleep, but once I'm really asleep, I'm good. That doctor put her on melatonin, and it helped her with her sleeping problem, which is different than mine. My Mom's doctor told her that the antihistamine-based sleeping drugs were not good for people over 80. But they're all strong stuff, and I pretty much support the notion that they should require a prescription from a doctor, especially for people who haven't used them before. It was the first sleeping pill that worked on your brain, like an anti-anxiety or anti-depressant pill, rather than being an antihistamine. There are, now, a couple other drugs that have come along after Ambien. Which is why my 30 pill prescription has lasted a couple years. And most of the time half a pill is enough. for getting up for something important early in the morning, like a flight or appointment. Mostly I just use Ambien when I absolutely have to go to sleep earlier than I've been accustomed to, e.g. I don't like those either, as they make me really drowsy the next day. Usually when I take it I take it for only one night or two, then switch to an antihistimine based sleeping pill. So it's sort of addictive for me too, in that respect. In my case, I have headaches the next day from it, and I have more trouble getting to sleep the second night. Like sleepwalking, getting up in the night to snack without remembering it at all (or even, some say, sleep driving!). If you're not asleep in 10 minutes, it didn't work.īut it has side effects. You want to take it and immediately get into bed and turn off the light. It can also make you a little dizzy or floaty. Didn't seem fair.Īmbien, in the right dose, will put you to sleep really fast. When I was addicted (that's the right word, I guess), I was slightly miffed that Ambien gave me so much trouble but without the slightest "high" or anything. The ironic thing is that it gives absolutely no buzz at all, unlike all other addictive drugs. Now living at sea level in Thailand I have no altitude insomnia and will live closer to sea level, much as I love Mexico City, when I return.īut again, you can get Ambien in Mexico but again, I strongly urge taking it only occasionally if you get it. (I was married to a Mexican living here before and her family showed me how things really function in Mexico). If you're fluent in Spanish, you can do get it if you know Mexico or just find the right (but maybe not so right) doctor. But I'm wise to the ways of Mexico and got legal prescriptions, but this time used it only occasionally, once tor twice a week. At first it as difficult with my regular doc reluctant (rightly) to prescribe it. I got off it in States.īut with greater age, I suffered greatly from insomnia in 2015. I had no idea I was addicted until I failed to pick up a refill on time. For 5-6 years, it was prescribed for me for use every night, I think a 10 mg dose. It was only an uncomfortable week to get it out of the system when I returned to U.S.Īmbien I guess was fairly new when I first got it as my US doctor said he was prescribing it precisely because it as not addictive. Eventually, a doctor prescribed Ativan, which helped but is slightly addictive. When I lived in Mexico City for 8 years when I was much younger, the altitude did bring on insomnia (Bogata as much, much worse). When I had a U.S.-based job that called for frequent international travel to Asia, Africa, Middle East and (too little, as it was all expense account) Europe, I received prescriptions for Ambien both to sleep on the plane and to lessen jet leg (try to stay up to nightfall then take enough Ambien to sleep for 8 hours). Beyond all my other stints in Mexico, I lived all of 2015 in Mexico City. Click to expand.Yes, you need a prescription for Ambien in Mexico. One memorable acquisition, he recalls, that provided incredible insights into Naperville’s earliest years was a journal offered by a rare book dealer filled with discussions and debates on topics of politics, culture, social issues and religion from this area in the 1830s and ‘40s. From donations of great-grandmother’s quilt, a husband’s book collection or corporate archiving for groups like the Naperville Woman’s Club, he helps to preserve all things Naperville. Ogg also serves as a member of the acquisitions committee. Whether it’s walking tours, presentations, helping individuals with genealogy, or going out to different service clubs talking about Naperville history, he is-in many ways-the memory keeper of Naperville, helping people understand what has happened in the city. One aspect of his job he particularly enjoys is the many opportunities to interact with the public. With the help of a team of about twenty volunteers, documents such as these are routinely indexed, catalogued and preserved. Just different ways to look at a problem.”Īs Naper Settlement’s curator of research, Ogg’s primary work is to manage its collection of paper archives: books, photographs, documents, newspapers, diaries and letters. “If I’m looking at a house history, it’s one thing to look at the deed-who owns the house-but I also look at the tax records to see when improvements were made, maybe look at the phone book and newspaper records to see what was written about the house and the family. “You have to be able to look around the back door,” Ogg explains. One of the key strategies he has implemented over the years is not to always look at questions point blank. It wasn’t until his undergrad internship working at a heritage house museum for Senator Pettigrew in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, that he found museum work so well-suited to his skills and interests-a career that has often led people to hail him as a “history detective.” “I think it’s that love of history that carried into my professional life.” “I was blessed on both sides of the family with grandparents and elderly relatives who had massive old houses full of closets and drawers and attics and basements.” From family heirlooms to little-found objects, everything had a story, a meaning and a purpose. “I did like family history,” Ogg recalls. With both sides of his family still living in the same area they have farmed for three generations-and having an ancestral history that dates back to the 1600s-there was a treasure trove of stories, artifacts and genealogy that attracted his interest. This may not come as a big surprise to those who knew Ogg as a boy, growing up outside Peoria in his hometown of Morton, Illinois. Currently he’s curator of research at the award-winning museum, Naper Settlement, and he couldn’t be happier. Nichols.įor the past twenty-seven years Bryan Ogg has been doing what he loves.
